Resurrection of the dead Category: Bible Devotion/Consecration

Resurrection of Lazarus

The expected reign of the Messiah

The apostles were convinced that the Messiah had come to establish the Kingdom of the people of the saints of the Most High, foretold by the prophet Daniel (Dan 7:27).

The apostles understood that in the course of the coming battle for the liberation of Israel from the Roman occupation, their leader could be killed, but He was able to resurrect Himself to continue the fight against the invaders and achieve victory over them. They all witnessed the resurrection of the four-day-old Lazarus by Jesus and had every reason to believe that the army of liberation led by Jesus would be invincible. They hoped that the time had come when “all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God” (Isaiah 52:10) and that finally “the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High(Dan 7:27).

18 But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. Дан 7, 27. Откр 7, 12. Откр 11, 15.
...
27 Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; Лк 1, 33.

After the crucifixion of Jesus and His resurrection, the apostles nevertheless asked the Savior about the time of the fulfillment of Daniel's prophecy: “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?” (Acts 1:6). The Lord explained to them that at the moment this issue did not directly concern them, and that now their mission is completely different: to testify about Him, for which they will soon be given strength from above (Acts 1:8).

6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? Дан 7, 18, 27. Ам 9, 11.
7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Лк 24, 49. Деян 2, 32.

Death of Lazarus

Jesus said, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. … Lazarus is dead” (John 11:11,14).

1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth (αὐτοῖς Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται); but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep (ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν).
12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep (εἰ κεκοίμηται), he shall do well.
13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death (περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ): but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep (περὶ τῆς κοιμήσεως τοῦ ὕπνου).
14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead (Λάζαρος ἀπέθανεν).

17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

Jesus said: “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” (Jhn 11:25).

21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again (Ἀναστήσεται ὁ ἀδελφός σου).
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Иов 19, 25-26. Ис 26, 19. Иез 37, 4. Дан 12, 2.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life (ἡ ἀνάστασις καὶ ἡ ζωή): he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live (ζήσεται):
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die (οὐ μὴ ἀποθάνῃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα). Believest thou this? Ин 6, 54.
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. Мф 16, 16.

Resurrection of Christ in contrast
to the resurrection of Lazarus

The close connection — both historical and ideological — of Lazarus' Resurrection and the Resurrection of Christ should not, however, close for us the most essential difference between these two events, the difference that makes them phenomena — each is perfect, almost to the point of a contrast of a special order.
