For example the Cardinal of Madrid said to me, “Sit down, compose yourself, and listen. Like all other bishops, we received the encyclicals of the popes on social justice. But we were not interested and didn’t pay much attention to them. We went our merry way as we have done for centuries, doing what we thought was best for the people. We forgot that Christ had given us a way, and that the popes were trying to show it to us.

“We were very, very sinful, and we still are. I want you to know that all the parish priests in Spain who are poor, and all the convents that are poor, have been spared by the communists.
