Time of visitation
Time of visitation
(ὁ καιρὸς τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς)
in the New Testament
41
And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
42
Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things
which belong
unto thy peace!
but now they are hid from thine eyes.
43
For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,
44
And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee;
and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another;
because thou
knewest not the time of thy visitation
( τὸν καιρὸν τῆς ἐπισκοπῆς σου).
11
Dearly beloved, I beseech
you
as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
12
Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by
your
good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in
the day of visitation
( ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπισκοπῆς).
Time of visitation
in the Old Testament
31
And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said, Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made them gods of gold.
32
Yet now, if thou wilt forgive their sin—;
and if not, blot me, I pray thee, out of thy book which thou hast written.
33
And the LORD said unto Moses, Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book.
34
Therefore now go, lead the people unto
the place
of which I have spoken unto thee: behold, mine Angel shall go before thee: nevertheless
in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them
( יֹום פָּקְדִי וּפָקַדְתִּי עֲלֵיהֶם חַטָּאתָֽם׃).
35
And the LORD plagued the people, because they made the calf, which Aaron made.
17
Every man is brutish by
his
knowledge;
every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image
is
falsehood, and
there is
no breath in them.
18
They are vanity, the work of errors:
in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
9
Mine heart within me is broken because of the prophets;
all my bones shake;
I am like a drunken man, and like a man whom wine hath overcome, because of the LORD, and because of the words of his holiness.
10
For the land is full of adulterers;
for because of swearing the land mourneth;
the pleasant places of the wilderness are dried up, and their course is evil, and their force
is
not right.
11
For both prophet and priest are profane;
yea, in my house have I found their wickedness, saith the LORD.
12
Wherefore their way shall be unto them as slippery
ways
in the darkness: they shall be driven on, and fall therein: for
I will bring evil upon them,
even
the year of their visitation,
saith the LORD.
19
But I
was
like a lamb
or
an ox
that
is brought to the slaughter;
and I knew not that they had devised devices against me,
saying, Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.
20
But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.
21
Therefore thus saith the LORD of the men of Anathoth, that seek thy life, saying, Prophesy not in the name of the LORD, that thou die not by our hand:
22
Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts, Behold,
I will punish them:
the young men shall die by the sword;
their sons and their daughters shall die by famine:
23
And there shall be no remnant of them: for
I will bring evil upon the men of Anathoth,
even
the year of their visitation.
22
A sound of battle
is
in the land, and of great destruction.
23
How is the hammer of the whole earth cut asunder and broken!
how is Babylon become a desolation among the nations!
24
I have laid a snare for thee, and thou art also taken, O Babylon, and thou wast not aware: thou art found, and also caught, because thou hast striven against the LORD.
…
27
Slay all her bullocks;
let them go down to the slaughter: woe unto them!
for their day is come, the time of their visitation.
…
31
Behold, I
am
against thee,
O thou
most proud, saith the Lord GOD of hosts: for
thy day is come, the time
that
I will visit thee.
32
And the most proud shall stumble and fall, and none shall raise him up: and I will kindle a fire in his cities, and it shall devour all round about him.
1
Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness
which
they have prescribed;
2
To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and
that
they may rob the fatherless!
3
And what will ye do in
the day of visitation
( וּמַֽה־תַּעֲשׂוּ לְיֹום פְּקֻדָּה), and in the desolation
which
shall come from far?
to whom will ye flee for help?
and where will ye leave your glory?
4
Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand
is
stretched out still.
