Priests were beaten, shrines were defiled

The Orthodox dioceses in Lvov, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk were literally destroyed. This happened on a wave of wild nationalism, with the help of the paramilitary organization UNA-UNSO. Orthodox were expelled from their churches, clergymen were beaten, shrines were defiled. This could still be imagined in the Middle Ages, but for this to happen in the 20th century in relation to the "Sister Church" — it does not fit in the mind. On the territory of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, proselytism is carried out — which also cannot take place in relations between sister Churches. There is a Catholic expansion. Only in Russia there are about ten missionary Catholic orders.

From the interview of Patriarch Alexy II to the review "Radonezh" at the end of 1999.
