Seraphim of Sarov Church. Personalities Therese de Lisieux

Xenia of Saint Petersburg

Xenia of Saint Petersburg (ru. Ксения Петербургская)

Feasts: Jan 24/Feb 6 and May 24/Jun 6

Born: 1719–1730;
Died: 1803; St. Petersburg, Russia

Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?

17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 2 Пет 1, 16. 1 Кор 2, 13.
18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. Деян 17, 18. Rom 1, 16.
19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Ис 29, 14.
20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? Ис 33, 18. Ис 44, 25.
21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. Мф 11, 25.
22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: Мф 12, 38. Мф 16, 1.
23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; Ис 8, 14. Деян 17, 18. Rom 9, 32.
24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Rom 1, 16. Col 2, 3.
25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: Ин 7, 48. Иак 2, 5.
27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 2 Кор 10, 5.
28 And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:
29 That no flesh should glory in his presence. Rom 3, 27. Еф 2, 9.
1 Co 1:17-29

Hymns

Troparion
Tone 4
Having renounced the vanity of the earthly world,
Thou didst take up the cross of a homeless life of wandering;
Thou didst not fear grief, privation, nor the mockery of men,
And didst know the love of Christ.
Now taking sweet delight of this love in Heaven,
O Xenia, the blessed and divinely wise,
Pray for the salvation of our souls.

Troparion
Tone 8
In you, O mother was carefully preserved what is according to the image.
For you took up the Cross and followed Christ.
By so doing, you taught us to disregard the flesh for it passes away,
But to care instead for the soul since it is immortal.
Therefore, O Blessed Xenia, your spirit rejoices with the Angels.
