Innocently convicted...

At the remark of Metropolitan Filaret that there are no innocently convicted, Haaz jumped up and exclaimed: “You have forgotten Christ, Vladyka!” No one dared to say such things to Filaret.

… during a meeting of the Moscow Committee for the Guardianship of Prisons. The well-known prison doctor F. P. Gaaz, known throughout Russia, spoke about the fact that among the prisoners there are many who were convicted innocently. Filaret, who presided over the meeting, severely rebuked the doctor: “There are no innocently condemned. If the court already punishes, it means that the defendant was guilty…” Dr. Haas cried out: “Vladyka, what are you talking about! You forgot about Christ!” There was a pause, and the eyes of those present turned to Filaret. After a pause for some time, the Metropolitan said quietly: “No, Fyodor Petrovich, it’s not like that. I have not forgotten Christ… But when I now uttered hasty words… then Christ forgot about me.” After that, he stood up, blessed those present and left.
