Apophis — evil serpent of the underworld, enemy of Ra
In Egyptian mythology, Apep (also spelled Apepi, and Aapep, or Apophis in Greek) is an evil god, the deification of darkness and chaos, and thus opponent of light and Ma'at (order/truth). Apophis was the personification of all that was evil. He was the most dangerous of the chaos monsters who constantly threatened the devine order. Apophis was seen as a giant snake/serpent, or occasionally as a dragon in later years. Apophis had also titles: Serpent from the Nile and Evil Lizard. Battles with RaEvery night Apophis attackes the boat of the sun god Ra when it passes through the underworld. He was killed by Ra many times, but he always comes back. Apophis was the Great Rebel, the Evil One who led the forces of chaos against the sun-god Ra. 99942 Apophis99942 Apophis is a near-Earth asteroid. It was initially observed in December 2004. It will come scarily close to Earth on Friday, April 13, 2029. Initial observations indicated a small probability (up to 2.7%) that Apophis would strike the Earth in 2029. Later the cumulative impact probability (for the 2029 Earth encounter) was reduced to be around 0.004%. Apophis is probably going to return back to Earth in 2035 or so. At this time the ability to calculate the Apophis's orbit is blurred out by the 2029 Earth encounter. See alsoLinks
