Bible. Wrestling with God

“I desire to reason with God”

“Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God” (Job 13:3).

2 What ye know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you. Иов 12, 3. Иов 15, 9.
3 Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

“My eyes pour out tears to God” (Job 16:20).

19 Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high.
20 … mine eye poureth out tears unto God.
21 O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleadeth for his neighbour!

“Would He contend with me in His great power? No! But He would take note of me.” (Job 23:6).

3 Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!
4 I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. Psa 15:2.
5 I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me.
6 Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. 1Co 4:4.
7 There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

“Gird up thy loins now like a man”

“Gird up thy loins now like a man” (Job 40:7).

1 Then answered the LORD unto Job out of the whirlwind, and said,
2 Gird up thy loins now like a man: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me. Job 38:3.

Then Job answered the LORD and said: “Behold, I am vile; What shall I answer You? I lay my hand over my mouth.” (Job 40:3-4).

1 Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said,
2 Shall he that contendeth with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.
3 Then Job answered the LORD, and said,
4 Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.
5 Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

Wrestling with God and wrestling with men

“You have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed” (Gen.32:28).

24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. Hos 12:3-4.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob's thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. Gen.35, 10.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there. Суд 13, 18.
30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. Суд 8, 8. 3 Цар 12, 25.

1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. Евр 11, 17.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son: Пс 104, 9. Сир 44, 21. 1 Мак 2, 52. Лк 1, 73. Евр 6, 13.
17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice. Gen.12, 3. Gen.18, 18. Gen.26, 4. Сир 44, 22. Деян 3, 25. Гал 3, 8, 16. Пс 71, 17.
