Fatima. Historical dates

  • 1915: April — October
    Lucia Santos (port. Lúcia dos Santos) and her three friends saw in the sky a luminous figure of Angel. This happened between the months of April and October in the year 1915.
  • 1916: spring, summer, autumn
    In 1916 three times the Angel of Peace appeared to Lucia Santos, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto. During the first two apparitions he tought the children how to pray. In the third apparition the Angel gave them Holy Communion.
  • May 13, 1917
    Our Lady appeared to these three children for the first time. She asked them to come to this place during next six months, on the 13th day. Our Lady asked the children to offer themselves to God and bear all the sufferings He wills to send them. She asked them to pray the Rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.
  • June 13, 1917
    Our Lady appeared to these children again. She said that Jacinta and Francisco will be in Heaven soon, but Lucia should stay on earth to help Her.
  • July 13, 1917
    Our Lady appeared to these children again. She showed them hell where the souls of poor sinners go and explained God's plan to save the people from the fire of hell. All this became known as the Secret of Fatima.
  • August 13, 1917
    On this day the Mayor took the children to a prison. Our Lady appeared to them when they returned back, a few days later. She asked the children to pray very much, and make sacrifices for sinners.
  • September 13, 1917
    The large crowd gathered around the children before the apparition took place. People wanted Our Lady to cure sick, to return relatives from war, and so on. Our Lady announced that the miracle is going to happen during Her next apparition on October 13th.
  • October 13, 1917
    The Our Lady came to little holmoak as promised. She revealed to the children her name — Our Lady of Rosary. More than 70 thousand of pilgrims had witnessed «The Dance of the Sun».

    Lucia came to Asilo de Vilar, in a suburb of Porto, to the College of the Dorothean Sisters.
  • August 26, 1923
    Lucia enters the group of «Daughters of Mary» at Asilo de Vilar, where only the most exemplary students were admitted. It was on this day, August 26, 1923, that Our Lady for the first time appeared to her again.
  • August 24, 1925
    Lucia received confirmation.
  • October 25, 1925
    Lucia came to the convent of the Dorothean Sisters, at Pontevedra, Spain.
  • December 10, 1925 [The Whole Truth About Fatima, Vol.II, Prt.I, Ch.VI]
    Apparition of Our Lady at Pontevedra, Spain. The Most Holy Virgin appeared to Lucia, and by Her side, elevated on a luminous cloud, was the Child Jesus. The Holy Virgin asked Lucia to announce the Devotion of Reparation.
  • February 15, 1926
    A new apparition of the Child Jesus in Pontevedra, Spain. Jesus asked Lucia to be persistent in the spreading the Devotion of Five First Saturdays. He said, that the souls who make the five First Saturdays with fervour and to make reparation to the Heart of Heavenly Mother, please Him more than those who make fifteen, but are lukewarm and indifferent.
  • July 16, 1926
    Lucia left Pontevedra on July 16, 1926, for the novitiate of Tuy.
  • October 2, 1926
    Lucia received the habit of the Dorothean Sisters.
  • December 17, 1927
    Father Aparicio asked Lucia to write down in details an account of the apparition of Pontevedra, especially regarding the request of Our Lady about Redemptory Devotion, and also to show if they were connected with the messages of 1917. Lucia prayed fervently and Jesus, in a distinct voice, made her hear His words, that she allowed to write everything that is asked of her, and write everything the Most Holy Virgin revealed in the apparition when She spoke of this devotion, but for the rest of the Secret, He asked her to keep silence.
  • October 3, 1928
    After her reception of the habit on October 2, 1926, Lucia pronounced her first vows on October 3, 1928, in Tuy.
  • October 8, 1928
    In a letter, dated October 8, 1928, Canon Formigao describes the Devotion of Reparation as a propitiation for sins against Holy Mother.
  • June 13, 1929
    Apparition of Holy Trinity and Our Lady at Tuy, Spain. Our Lady informed Lucia that the moment had come in which She wished Lucia to make known to Holy Church Her desire for the Consecration of Russia, and Her promise to convert it.
  • August 19, 1929
    Pope Pius XI had published a prayer, confiding the Russian people to the protection of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus.
  • February 2, 1930
    Public letter of Pope Pius XI, addressed to Cardinal Pompili, Vicar of Rome. Pius XI wishes to celebrate a Mass of expiation, propitiation and reparation for many criminal offences against the Divine Heart of Jesus and also for the relief of his dear Russian people.
  • May 29, 1930
    Letter of Sr. Lucia to Fr. Goncalves. Lucia explains the Devotion of Reparation and how the Holy Father and the Bishops of the Catholic World must consecrate Russia.
  • May 29, 1930
    The Revelation in Tuy, Spain, the night of May 29-30, 1930. Our Lord revealed to Lucia that there are five types of offences and blasphemies committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
  • June 12, 1930
    The letter of the Sister Lucia to the Father Goncalves, Lucia’s confessor. Answers to his questions and the story of the revelation at Tuy on May 29, 1930. Explanation of the Devotion of Reparation and Consecration of Russia.
  • October 13, 1930
    On October 13, 1930, thirteen years after the events, the Bishop of Leiria, in his pastoral letter “A divina Providencia”, finally pronounced that the visions of the children at the Cova da Iria are worthy of faith and the cult of Our Lady of Fatima is officially permitted.
  • May 13, 1931
    The Act of consecration of Portugal to the Immaculate Heart of Mary was pronounced by Cardinal Cerejeira in the presence of the apostolic nuncio, all the bishops of the country, before everybody and in the name of all.
  • August 29, 1931
    The letter of the Sister Lucia to the bishop (1931-08-29). Our Lord in speaking to Sister Lucia gave her to understand in all clarity that the Holy Father had been informed of His requests. And Christ compared the disobedience of His clergy with disobedience of Louis XIV.
  • October 3, 1934
    On the feast of Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, Sister Lucia pronounced her perpetual vows.
  • October 9, 1934
    A few days after her perpetual profession, Sister Lucia had to depart from Tuy to return to the college of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows at Pontevedra, where she had already done her postulancy.
  • January 21, 1935
    Sister Lucia answered various questions of Father Goncalves in an important letter. She remind him that three years ago Our Lord was very displeased because His request of Consecration of Russia had not been attended to. Up to date Our Lord is ready to show His mercy toward Russia, as He promised five years ago, and whom He wishes so much to save.
  • September 12, 1935
    Jacinta's coffin was opened during transference of her mortal remains to a tomb specially built at Fatima. Her face was seen to be perfectly incorrupt. Bishop da Silva ordered Sister Lucia to write down everything about life of Jasinta. As result, we have her First Memoir.
  • December 25, 1935
    Sister Lucia finished to write her First Memoir around December 25, 1935.
  • May 18, 1936
    Letter of Lucia to Father Goncalves (1936-05-18). The Immaculate Heart of Mary will save Russia. It has been entrusted to Her already.
  • November 21, 1937
    At the request of Bishop of Leiria Sister Lucia wrote down her Second Memoir, where she had to described her own biography.
  • September 13, 1939
    During the pilgrimage to Fatima, Bishop da Silva decided to inform the thousands of pilgrims at the Cova da Iria of the Devotion of Reparation on the Five First Saturdays of the month. Shortly afterwards, he published it in Voz da Fatima.
  • October 22, 1940
    The Revelation in Tuy (1940-10-22)
    Our Lord has said, that He will “punish the nations for their crimes”. The Pope will obtain an abbreviation of these days of tribulation if he promulgate “the Act of Consecration of the whole world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with a special mention of Russia”.
  • December 1, 1940
    In the letter of December 1, 1940 to her confessor, Father Goncalves, Sister Lucia discloses the next secret of her conversation with Heavens: the Hearts of Our Good Lord and Our Good Heavenly Mother are sad and grieved because Portugal in its majority does not correspond either to Their graces or love. The Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary frequently complain about the sinful life of the majority of the people, even of those who call themselves practising Catholics.
  • December 2, 1940
    Sister Lucia wrote a letter to Pope Pius XII requesting the Consecration of the world and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the extention of the Devotion of Reparation to the whole world.
  • December 19, 1940
    In the letter of December 1, 1940 to Cardinal Cerejeira Sister Lucia wrote, that Our Lord is dissatisfied and grieved with the sins of the world and of Portugal… and especially about the lukewarmness, indifference and extremely comfortable life of the majority of the priests and members of religious organizations. The number of souls He meets through prayer and sacrifice is extremely small.
  • June 12, 1941
    The Revelation in Tuy (1941-06-12)
    On June 12, 1941, Sister Lucia had the divine communication with Our Lord regarding the Spanish Church. Our Lord complained about the coldness and laxity of the clergy of Spain both secular and regular, and the indifference of the sinful life of the Christian people. Our Lord had proposed remedy: bishops have to decide on true reform and He promised to help them.
  • August 31, 1941
    Sister Lucia wrote the final words of Third Memoir on August 31, 1941. For the first time she revealed the first two parts of the Secret: one about hell and a second one about the Immaculate Heart of Mary. While writing her Third Memoir, Sister Lucia makes it clear that she will not reveal the third part of the Secret.
  • October 7, 1941
    The Bishop of Leiria, José Alves Correia da Silva, asked Sister Lucia for additional information and demanded to write everything she still remembered about Fatima. The result will be written Fourth Memoir.
  • December 8, 1941
    Finally, Sister Lucia sent her writings to the Bishop. She had made a point of repeating the two parts of the great Secret, both times (in the Third Memoir and in the Fourth Memoir) exactly in the same terms, except that in the last writing she added the phrase from the Third Secret: “In Portugal, the dogma of faith will always be preserved, etc…”
  • Mid-October 1943
    Bishop da Silva gives her the formal order to write the Secret. Sister Lucia, mysteriously prevented, is unable to fulfill her obedience.
  • January 2, 1944
    The apparition of Our Lady in Tuy, Spain. The Mother of God has strengthened Lucia and confirmed to her that it is indeed God’s will that she should write the words of the final Third Secret and give it to hierarhy.
  • June 17, 1944
    The envelope containing the Third Secret is handed to Bishop da Silva, who refuses to open it. Bishop da Silva proposes to send the Secret to the Holy Office. Rome refuses.
  • December 8, 1945
    Bishop da Silva places Sister Lucia’s envelope in another envelope, also sealed with wax. He makes it clear that after his death the Secret must be passed on to Cardinal Cerejeira.
  • From 1946 to 1960
    Numerous testimonies stating that the Third Secret «will have to be read to the world in 1960», «because the Holy Virgin wishes it so».
  • May 13, 1948
    Lucia took the habit of a Carmelite, and received the name of “Sister Mary Lucia of the Immaculate Heart”.
  • May 31, 1949
    Lucia made her one profession, a solemn profession, on May 31, 1949.
  • September 2, 1952
    Father Schweigl, with permission of the Pope Pius XII, questions Sister Lucia on the Third Secret. Later he will tell to colleague that the Secret consists of two parts.
  • May, 1955
    Cardinal Ottaviani speaks with Sister Lucia. He questions her on the Third Secret.
  • End of 1956 — early 1957
    The Holy Office asks for a copy of all writings of Sister Lucia, as well as the manuscript of the Third Secret.
  • April 16, 1957
    The envelope reaches Rome.
  • December 26, 1957
    Conversation of Sister Lucia with Father Fuentes (1957-12-26). Sister Lucia declares to Father Fuentes on the subject of the Third Secret: “Only the Holy Father and the Bishop of Fatima are permitted to know the secret, but they have chosen to not know it so that they would not be influenced.”
  • October 9, 1958
    Pope Pius XII dies, without having read the Secret.
  • August 17, 1959
    John XXIII receives the envelope of the Third Secret at Castelgandolfo. He reads it a few days later.
  • February 1960 (?)
    Pope John XXIII has Cardinal Ottaviani read the Third Secret.
  • February 8, 1960
    Communiqué of the press agency ANI: the Vatican announces that the Secret will not be divulged.
  • February 24, 1960
    Cardinal Cerejeira declares: «I was not consulted».
  • June 3, 1963
    Death of John XXIII. He never made any public declaration concerning the Third Secret.
  • June 21, 1963
    Shortly after his election, Pope Paul VI asks for the text of the Third Secret.
  • February 11, 1967
    Declaration of Cardinal Ottaviani on the Third Secret.
  • July 7, 1977
    Cardinal Ottaviani answers three questions on the Secret of Fatima.
  • November 1980
    Problematic declarations of Pope John Paul II at Fulda, in Germany.
  • Early 1982
    Before his pilgrimage to Fatima for May 13, John Paul II consults a Portuguese priest of the Curia, so that he translate the Secret for the Pope «with all the nuances of the language».
  • September 10, 1984
    The Bishop of Leiria-Fatima declares: “The contents of the third Secret concern only our Faith…, the loss of Faith…”
  • October 1984 — June, 1985
    Cardinal Ratzinger’s «variations» on the subject of the Third Secret.
